Deep in the suburbs, this house was originally designed with a semi-detached garage and a sub-standard entryway. The main goal for this renovation was to make a front entry foyer that could accommodate several people arriving at once. The clients often host large family dinners, so this was key. The kitchen and dining space was also designed to be large enough to accommodate 16 people. The existing damp breezeway was filled in to make room for a main level laundry room. New roof trusses were added to the structure to flatten out the form for a modern look. The master bedroom was built out over the front entry walkway, to allow for covered entry. A room placed at the top of the stairs provides a study area overlooking the backyard pool. The placement of the room also brings sunlight into the centre of the house plan. The original brick of the house, which was failing, had to be removed. There are 12 ‘commemorative touchstones’ throughout the HRM carrying broad narratives related to the Explosion. A 13th will be installed as part of the Africville Interpretive Plan. Each marker was designed as a tensioned duality; deriving their form from the idea of exploded, sheared off trees that were prevalent in the neighbourhoods post-explosion and then, secondarily, developed to evoke biomorphic forms of two people, one from the past and one from today having an interaction. The duality of the form is to evoke the tension between the past and future, tragedy and hope, the Imo and the Mont Blanc, the narrows between Dartmouth and Halifax. One marker is designed to be a grandfather speaking to a child, one is designed as the past and future walking alongside one another quietly, two others, look back at each other and speak directly. There are 4 "types" of markers. Each marker is partially designed in corten steel, with a short narrative laser cut into the form of the prevalent story for that location. The other form is designed of polished stainless steel with 100 perforations, representing the 100-year commemoration and the lives lost in the explosion. Each form has a myriad of reflected experiences between the two forms. The markers were designed to create limitless possibilities of discovery and experience with each interaction. As sunlight changes throughout the days and seasons, reflections consistently change on the marker. The viewer also experiences being reflected in the stainless steel and therefore seeing themselves as part of the commemorative marker only to then realize that they are being reflected back with a perforated reflection, providing the viewer with a subtle and unexpected powerful moment representative of the magnitude of what happened that day. With rain, the rust from the cut story in the corten steel form weeps from each letter. The renovation provides 1200 square feet on the main level for the new centrally located clinic. Above, the modern two-bedroom apartment maintains the street’s two storey datum lines, while providing an urban alternative to the clients’ suburban home. SOMA’s playful facade feeds off the character of the neigbourhood with its bold injection of colour. Precedents like the Four Sisters, enVie and Gus’ Pub inspire this modern take on the colourful personality of the street. Bright green LEDs light the storm door’s signage and animate the adjacent area, allowing the elevation to pour out over the sidewalk. Deep fluorescent green window ledges offer a simple nod to the modern. A subtle difference in outer and inner colouring creates the illusion of a constant luminance emitted from the building. The narrow perspective of the street allows the otherwise paper-thin extrusions to appear thick, in keeping with the box frame windows of the old Scotiabank building adjacent to the property. At the street, the waiting area is drenched in sunlight and activity. The outer layer of public spaces receives daylighting - rare for such a narrow urban lot - while inward treatment rooms benefit from privacy and seclusion. This layout allows a transparency that draws curiosity and interaction from passers-by, while maintaining the utmost discretion for SOMA's clients. In the treatment rooms, a rigorous design simplifies the complex and delicate nature of clinical procedures. The sequence of motions, equipment, and the nurse’s corresponding routine are all taken into account to minimize crossover and optimize the space for a fluid and efficient performance. The minimalist interior strikes a perfect balance between the crisp cleanliness of a clinic and the refreshing calm of a spa. Clean details and layout allow the complex to seem simple, while warm finishes like bamboo flooring and surfaces harbour a sense of relaxation. The architect’s design for the SOMA logo is drawn from the triangulated geometry of the front facade window layout. Conceived as an oversized knitting loom, the hooks act as the hut’s structural footing; the hoop doubles as seating along the interior perimeter; and the brightly colored knit cladding will act as a beacon amongst the homogenous white winter backdrop of Winnipeg. As a way to weave together modern construction technology and traditional meth- ods of craft, a knitting circle could be assembled amongst women in the community as the primary basis of construction for the LOOM, providing a meaningful social element to the project. The main-level interior was gutted, opened up and given a bright bold look to go along with the homeowners love of colour and Orla Kiely graphics. Beyond aesthetics, the clients were also looking to ensure their home was cutting-edge energy efficient. The house insulation was beefed up with new sprayfoam insulation and windows throughout. A new concrete topping was poured on the main level for hydronic heating. Heating for the house is dual-fed by a German-made "Walltherm" system and solar panels that feed a stratified hot water storage tank in the basement. The Walltherm is the first natural down-draft hydronic wood gasification stove. The Walltherm is not just a wood stove, it's a hydronic wood stove and provides space heating and domestic hot water. The Walltherm has consequently low fuel consumption with an efficiency of 84% (HHV). This hydronic wood stove can be connected directly to the central heating system and/or to a thermal storage tank. The "Walltherm" wood fireplace compresses the heat from the fireplace and pumps it to the basement where it heats water. The water is stored in a tank that has four strata, each at different temperatures. Water gets pumped off at a lower level for the hydronic heating and at a higher level for the dishwasher. In seasons where the wood stove is not required, the solar panels can produce heat for the system. If not enough solar hours are achieved, the tank does have a back up electric heater, although Nova Scotia is well known for having good solar heating capabilities. The large windows above the kitchen countertop are shaded in the summer time by a pergola over the deck that doubles as a brise-soleil for the windows. The Fundy Gateway's site is located along the Salmon River in Truro, NS where a tidal bore rushes through twice daily as part of the powerful Fundy tidal cycle. Our design process went hand-in-hand with intense research, taking cues from both the natural and cultural richness of the area in order to highlight the unique connection that exists between the sea and the sky. The project consists of one main building, an activated site plan, and two smaller buildings meant to shelter the active outdoor space from the sharp winds that exist on the site. The primary structure which will house an information centre, theatre, restaurant, gift shop and several interactive and flexible exhibition spaces, will act as both a gateway destination for visiting tourists as well as a hub for Truro and surrounding communities. To the west of the main building sits the two smaller "wind break" buildings. One will be designated for public washrooms, and change rooms, while the other is designed to be home to a public use telescope and observatory. The inclusion of an observatory in the design was a response to the lack of available facilities in the area as well as widespread public interest. The observatory also doubles as an active interpretation node connecting the powerful tides in the region to the cycles of the cosmos. The observatory will open the site up to night-time use, will engage community members of all ages, and will give people, from near and far, yet another reason to visit. The architectural response was germinated from the idea of the "primitive hut" that would not overwhelm the stark floodplain area in which the building finds itself. The idea of the simple form of the tippee from the site's Mi'kmaq heritage was abstracted to a striking exposed glulam primary structure. The permeable nature of each architectural component on the site allows for interactions between users on the site and within the building. At its' apex, the building opens up to a soaring 54.6' high atrium, signifying and interpreting the highest tides found in the region. The primary circulation route through the main building is a ramp that winds through all levels, with activated nodes matching the elevation of the ramp to the tidal elevation in a particular town along the Fundy coast. At each one of these hot spots, a visitor can gain more information about that particular place if they are planning a visit. A new pedestrian and cycle pathway, that connects to existing provincial trails, leads to a new bridge over the Salmon River that pierces through the lower level of the interpretive centre. Second level interior and exterior observation decks take advantage of the sweeping views and sunsets to be found on site, during all four seasons. The site plan also sees spaces for an amphitheatre, fire pit, zipline across the river, constructed wet land and public courtyard. We feel these dorm washrooms have to be full of life. Users of the space are predominantly students, aged 17 to 21. Most of whom are away from the comforts of home for the first time. Therefore, we want to make these designs as full of life, colour, and warmth as we can to give those who are living the dorm life a feeling of joy for their new home away from home. Small dimensions and steeply pitched roofs are what exemplify the houses on the street. This design sought to mimic that fabric in a modern way. The width of the house is quite narrow, as was the original house that was on the site. Wood cladding, in bleaching stain and black, provides a simple and timeless texture and quality to the house, as does the metal roof. Coulee Crescent Neighbourhood (Copy) Coulee Crescent Neighbourhood Concept design for Habitat for Humanity This development was designed to ideally be located in a growing area, close to public arenas, schools, and a sports field. Access to endless pre-existing amenities would ensure that the neighbourhood become a vibrant, active community. The neighbourhood would provide housing for 46 low income families through a variety of housing types. The entrance to the site would be marked with iconic semi-detached units, which would fit in with the scale of the neighbouring houses. Within the site, two rows of townhouses would look out onto the beautiful wetland park and trails. Finally, at the second entrance to the site, barrier-free units would make use of leftover parcels of land, with townhouses stacked above to maintain density. The sharp angular form of these houses is a play on the familiar shed roof, with a crisp modern edge. The asymmetrical designs can accommodate different sized families on either side, allowing for a complementary dynamic between households. The more compact three-bedroom, two-level units are easily identified with black shiplap siding. Larger three-bedroom units, with lofts for future expansion of up to seven bedrooms, take advantage of the steep slope of the roof line to fit a third level above. Access to the homes will be through a central courtyard deck. This allows for a natural break in the open plan between the living room areas and the kitchen/dining areas. Making use of narrow lots and keeping unit footprints small helps to ensure that the street is overflowing with people and activity. Two-level townhouses are located on the southern side of the street, allowing sunlight to penetrate the site and maintain an inviting and vibrant atmosphere on the street. Three-level townhouses are situated on the north side of the street and look out over the two-level units into the beautiful wetland park beyond. The townhouses are designed with a simple aesthetic, using their different functions to define their form. The main living space of each unit is pushed forward on the site, while staircases are pushed back to create small sheltered entries into each unit. Staircases are easily identified by black shiplap siding and act as ‘spacers’ between units, which allow a small division and a little extra privacy between the living spaces for each family. The units bring forth their own character and personality with a small pop of colour on the front facade. Each barrier-free unit comprises the entire ground floor of two side-by-side townhouses. Two-level townhouses are stacked above these barrier-free units to maintain the density of the site. A variation on the standard townhouses, these buildings cleverly use their exterior form to reveal their interior units. White clad boxes for the two-level townhouses sit above grey clad bases, identifying the barrier-free unit below. Once again, black shiplap ‘spacers’ are used to create a small division between living spaces, ensuring that privacy is maintained. Two barrier-free townhouses are then faced towards each other, parallel to the street, making a small, intimate courtyard between the buildings. This design makes efficient use of narrow leftover parcels of land, away from wetland zones on the site. The gesture of the house points to the south-facing views of the water. The upper floor was designed to protrude over the large windows of the lower floor to minimize solar gains in the winter months. The upper-level windows are recessed from the facade to gain shade in the summer. The living/dining room opens up to the land via two 9-foot wide screened patio doors. The north side of the building is entirely clad and insulated to minimize thermal losses while the south side looks out to incredible views of the water. For the public spaces on the main level, a simple plan was made to give a minimal, open concept feel. The "shift" of the upper level to create the shade and solar gains needed to increase the energy efficiency of the house is what gave it it's name... Seabright Studio (Copy) Seabright Studio Built on the Aspotagan Peninsula in Nova Scotia, Seabright studio was designed for a local artist. Due to the typography of the area, we placed the studio along a steep embankment sited close to the existing home. We parted the studio into two sections instead of building at one grade. The upper section has easy access to the road, and the lower studio has more dramatic views of the beautiful bay. By cracking the building with an approximate 6-foot drop, the roofline is kept low and allows the roof to follow the grade of the land. We love them and suspect they were the height of fashion at the time, much like the many modern houses and renovations that we are now seeing around Halifax today. We like to keep as much of their retro aesthetic while still modernizing them for today's living. For this project, we removed the existing carport and replaced it with a bump out to allow for a modern kitchen. The existing kitchen didn't quite have a 3'-0" hallway. We had the old kitchen gutted and turned it into an appropriately scaled mudroom perfect for keeping a busy family organized. The siding was only replaced where necessary and painted out. A new main level fireplace and some large sliding doors were added out to a new deck and the beautiful forested backyard. The previous basement was not quite suitable for this hip public relations firm with a penchant for design and organization. After a bit of convincing, the existing "speed tile" wall between the old garage and the rest of the house was uncovered. Now exposed, it adds a textural quality to the space that was true to its' original nature. During the reno, it was also discovered that there was a beautiful wood beam that had been boxed in. Built in 1797, it is the second oldest building in Dartmouth. The house had been falling into disrepair over the last several decades so RHAD was thrilled to take over the building and begin restoring it to its former beauty. Our long list of renovations included a new paint job, replacement of rotten wood cladding and windows, restoring the original flooring , re-instating the garden, and completely renovating the lower courtyard level into a secondary office space that we share with Upland Urban Planning + Design. The builder, Samuel Greenwood, was born in Boston in 1741 into a family of mast makers and shipwrights, dating back at least three generations. He and his family arrived in Dartmouth in 1776. Greenwood would carry on the family business in Nova Scotia, working as a mast maker for the Royal British Navy. In 1783 King George III provided him with a land grant, a large wooded lot that is now Shubie Park, to supply timber to build masts for the Navy. It is likely that Greenwood used the timber from this land to build this house. After Greenwood’s death in 1826, the house was left to two of his ship builder sons, and then on to several other prominent craftsmen of the time including the owners of the Stanyan Ropeworks company, the first director of the Shubenacadie Canal Company, and a carpenter. The name of the property is a nod to that geology (the Greek bathos meaning "depth" and lithos, "rock"). There are two distinct land forms where the home is situated - the large "whalesbacks" or curved hills of granite, and the "erratics", which refers to the large, gravity-defying boulders left on the land by receding glaciers. Those natural elements inform components of the home's design. The lower level is a concrete base. Hard and rugged like the landscape itself, it emerges as if the batholithic rock has bubbled up from the land in which it sits. The concrete floors have white dye and blue stone aggregate added - a nod to the granitic rock of the area. The upper floor is a light cedar box that settles down onto the concrete, much like the thin later of organic matte that sweeps over the rugged terrain. The form of the house itself is strong and lacks adornment, which would only distract from the views of the land and vibrant sea. With the exception of the master bedroom, the upper floor is open-concept. This allows the homeowners to perch up high and enjoy natural light and panoramic ocean views. The lower level features an office, a media room and guest rooms that have their own washroom, laundry and kitchenette. The interior of the home is punctuated by a dramatic 63-foot countertop that runs along the entire back wall of the house. This surface does quadruple-duty, morphing from master bath countertop to laundry folding table, to the main kitchen and pantry counter, and then to an office desktop. Pocket doors allow each area to be closed off when required. Most of the countertop underlines large windows that span to the ceiling. The house incorporates passive solar heating strategies. The south-facing overhang over the large, lower level windows allows the sun to penetrate into the rooms in the winter, while summer sun is blocked. Upstairs, a shared screen porch, surrounded on three sides by the living room, dining room, and master bedroom, also acts as another opportunity to block summer sun inside the home, while allowing winter sun to penetrate the upper floor. Large screen openings on either side of the house allow the ocean breeze to flow through. The house also has a heat pump and hydronic heating. Due to the lower water table on the property, a large cistern in the mechanical room collects rainwater from the roof, which is then used for grey-water purposes like flushing toilets and watering outdoor plants. The gesture of the house points to the south-facing views of the water. The upper floor was designed to protrude over the large windows of the lower floor to minimize solar gains in the winter months. The upper-level windows are recessed from the facade to gain shade in the summer. The living/dining room opens up to the land via two 9-foot wide screened patio doors. The north side of the building is entirely clad and insulated to minimize thermal losses while the south side looks out to incredible views of the water. For the public spaces on the main level, a simple plan was made to give a minimal, open concept feel. The "shift" of the upper level to create the shade and solar gains needed to increase the energy efficiency of the house is what gave it it's name... The exterior resembles a boat or lake house like those we've seen dotting the historic Shubenacadie Canal system where it finds itself. It has a simple box form and a low-pitched roof with overhangs blurring the line between indoors and out. The cottage has two components, the Boat House and the Main House. The Main House is also divided into two compartments, the main cottage space and a guest house. The main space is an open plan with a loft bedroom suite on the second floor. The home was the second house ever built on the street, marking it as a landmark of the neighbourhood. Directly adjacent to this home, occupying the corner of Inglis and Ivanhoe Streets, used to be a parking lot. This project was to have a 16-unit apartment building take up that space instead. As the Design Architects, we conceptually designed the building to follow the prominent architectural features of its historic neighbour including massing, proportions, rhythm and materiality. The building's design is thoroughly articulated to take cues from the defining characteristics of Uniacke-Sawyer House, being sure not to copy the historic building but to re-interpret its significant components in a considered modern way. The project seeks to further the dynamic, evolving trajectory of the South End by introducing a contemporary piece of architecture carefully and thoughtfully, with a nod to the past. The piece of land originally only had two buildings on site, the farm house and the barn. Both were oriented directly due south to partake in solar gains and views out the mouth of the Halifax Harbour. Many decades later the property was sub-divided and plots of land sold off as a new development. The new housing placed their house facades facing the new curved road. The result is that the original farm house and barn are clearly oriented in a differing direction than the remainder of the housing on the street. When our client approached us, she was interested in tearing down the barn to allow for one-level living (with a basement for storage) and to build a house with a new foundation and a tighter envelope. We kept the existing house siting for the main public space of the home, complete with harbour view and direct south sunlight. And then wrapped that form with a new modern corrugated steel facade that faces the street. The old (cedar box) combines with the new (corrugated steel). This was the question for this renovation. Early versions of the design looked at multiple options from small interventions to tearing it down and rebuilding. A common question when renovating homes is "What stays... And what goes?". It's sometimes hard to know the answer. It's about finding a balance that is right for each particular neighbourhood and client. After many iterations, we fully gutted the interior and settled on converting the garage into a kitchen. We did this by opening up the ceiling to the rafters above, placing and exposing collar ties. We built-out rafters to hold the structure together when we removed the ceiling. A major decision in the design was keeping the stair location in its current place and making the design work around it. On the exterior of the home, we reclad the house with dark Cape Cod siding. We put in new windows but kept the existing brick in large chunks of the exterior on the back and sides. We worked closely with the client to strike the right balance on the interior finishes.
